Resting

Karyn is now in ICU where she has been resting since the surgery. We
are waiting on results on the type of infection she has in order to
tailor the antibiotics to most effectively treat it. Regardless, it
will be a few days before she is out of the ICU and most-likely
longer until she is able to come home. For now she needs rest and is
being well-cared for....the quality of care in the Neuro ICU at UCSF
is amazing.

A Long Day

Karyn had her surgery tonight at about 5:30. Details are still not
entirely clear but the gist of it is this. They did the flush
procedure and found no source of infection. Dr. Parsa then decided to
go into the cranial cavity and discovered an infected cyst. This
explains many things----the drainage, the headaches and the infection
symptoms such as the fever. Additionally, Dr. Parsa said that, while
in there, he saw no signs of active tumor.

Of course, the news of the tumor (or lack thereof) is fantastic and
Karyn will love to hear this. But nearly as good is the discovery of
the source of the infection for surely this will lead to the
alleviation of a lot of Karyn's immediate symptoms.

She is still in the recovery room in the OR awaiting a bed and will
surely be in ICU for the next two days, perhaps a bit more. Though
this stretch of the road turned out to be a little bumpier than we
thought, we now have the information that has been hiding from us---
the information we needed right about now.

To shunt or not to shunt

Dr Parsa (after looking at the CT scan) felt that a shunt was not needed. In she goes...

Oh Shunt

Dr. Parsa told us he was going to do the flush procedure then install a shunt. Taking Karyn up to the OR now. Here we go..

More News

Well, after a few rough nights and some low grade fevers, Karyn and
her dad went to see Dr. Parsa today. As I had feared, she is going to
get admitted into UCSF tonight for another surgery (to flush the
infection) and will return home for another 2 weeks of IV antibiotics.

We hope this will finally catch and cure the infection so Karyn can
start feeling better and hopefully she will be home for the weekend.

I will keep you all posted.....
